To register for March 17 or 18, or if you have any questions, e-mail me at johnca@ourpla.net or call 541-228-5228. Note: This page may be updated over time with changes/clarifications.

You've opened me to this amazing concept that I don't have to protect myself all the time because the rewards in opening up to people are potentially mind-blowing! That, in effect, is the difference you've made in my life. --Nicola Perera, Colombo, Sri Lanka
Thanks for convening the NVC session ... it rocked my world. --Brandon C.S. Sanders, Portland, Oregon
I got so much learning from your Experiencing Choicefulness session. I consider it as one of the more powerful sessions I attended at the intensive. --Margarita Mac, Minneapolis, Minnesota
Every time I talk with you, it opens up corners of my life that I hadn't noticed before. --Linnaea Marvell, Southern California

March 14 - The Power of Open-Hearted Communication - Wednesday, 7:15 - 8:45 pm

A "taste" of NonviolentCommunication (NVC) as i share it, to see if you want a full meal - one or both of the weekend workshops. Open to everyone.

March 17 - The Power of Open-Hearted Communication - Saturday, 10 am - 5 pm

An experiential introduction to the spirit of NVC, designed to get you in touch with the power of being open and clear with yourself and others. The "mechanics" of NVC (observations, feelings, needs, requests) will be introduced only after you've actually had a chance to experience what it's about. Some of the exercises we'll be doing have been valuable even to long-time NVC students.

Open to everyone, register by e-mailing to johnca@ourpla.net

March 18 - Deep Empathy and the Experience of Choice - Sunday, 10 am - 5 pm

The morning will be a variety of exercises and real-play (aka role-play), offering many opportunities to connect deeply with whatever is alive in ourselves and in others. After lunch we'll do an exercise that brings our attention to the choice each of us has in every moment, and supports learning how to ask for what we really want. There will also be some time to follow whatever comes up in the moment.

Open to everyone who came to the March 17 workshop (strongly recommended), or who has at some time been surprised by their ability to give deep empathy, and to express honestly and vulnerably. Register by e-mailing to johnca@ourpla.net

Location

All three events take place at The Spirit Moves, 1840 Willamette St, Eugene, Oregon. Here's a map (for directions, go there then click on the "Get directions" link)

Food
We'll take a lunch break from approximately 1 to 2pm. Bring (and share if you like) your own lunch, or visit one of the many restaurants nearby. We are welcome to eat at The Spirit Moves, and there's a tea station - some teas will be available, and feel free to bring your favorite.

Gifts/costs

I do not charge a fee for my workshops; i offer them as a gift to you. I am able to do this in part because others have gifted me generously in the past, and i work this way for two reasons: 1) I want anyone to be able to come regardless of their finances. 2) I want to stay clear that i don't share NVC to make money - i share it to contribute toward a world with more trust, in which everyone can fully manifest themselves.

**SO**, at the end of each workshop i will invite you pretty loud and clear to contribute, so that i can continue to work this way, and so that anyone can come to my workshops in the future. I want as much of your money (and only as much of your money) as you really enjoy giving :-). We will have a little time at the workshop to explore what comes up for everyone around this together; feel free to contact me individually as well.

More about me

I've been learning and sharing Nonviolent Communication (NVC) since 1998. Much of my contribution with it has been informal and organic with individuals and groups around me - where i live, organizations and networks i'm involved with (including the global NVC network), etc. I have also shared it in workshop settings:

NVC is one of the best processes i've found so far to share something i stumbled across in 1985. I was 20 years old, in the middle of two years off from college because i had no idea what i was doing there. I fell into a real community for the first time, took some risks to open up to others, and found myself at the center of a life-changing flowering of trust all around me. From that time, the inquiry has lived in me: how can i help this to happen for other people and groups/communities/networks, for everyone? NVC is one good answer to this question at the personal and interpersonal scale. My interest extends far beyond NVC, to process(es) that answer this question at all scales (see ProcessArts).

Deepening your NVC practice in Eugene and beyond

The most important way to learn Nonviolent Communication is to practice it in your daily life, with yourself and with those around you. Of course the chance to practice and learn in more formal settings can be very helpful too. There are lots of practice groups in Eugene, and the occasional workshop. Most of these are listed here: http://orncc.net/eugene.html and you can subscribe to an occasional announcement newsletter by e-mailing Meta Hough at mhough@pacinfo.com

For other parts of Oregon, see http://orncc.net/

You can find even more people and groups sharing NVC in Oregon and all over the world.

These organizations offer lengthy retreats and/or year-long leadership programs:
