Gaviotas is a town in Colombia that has accomplished incredible things environmentally, technologically and socially -- increasing local biodiversity dramatically in a formerly barren region, energy self-sufficiency, developing low-energy hand pumps, passive solar systems to boil water, and other creative technologies, while remaining on decent terms with the government, armed leftists and paramilitaries.
